The Relationship of the Messengers with the Seal of the Prophets

A prophet from Sudan
(A new reading in the story of Moses and Pharaoh)

Here, God Almighty clarifies in His firm revelation the relationship of the messengers with the seal of the prophets, due to the covenant they took to believe in him and support him, and this is confirmed in his holy books, the Torah and the Gospel. God Almighty says in His speech to Moses, after clarifying to him that his punishment can also reach those He wills, that mercy will reach those: " Those who follow the Messenger, the Unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in the Torah and the Gospel in their possession. He directs them to righteousness, and deters them from evil, and allows for them all good things, and prohibits for them wickedness, and unloads the burdens and the shackles that are upon them. Those who believe in him, and respect him, and support him, and follow the light that came down with him—these are the successful. [Qur'an 7:157]
God Almighty confirms that Muhammad is His Messenger to all people – this does not exclude anyone from Adam to Jesus – God says, "Say, [O Muhammad], 'O mankind, I am the Messenger of God to you all...'" [Qur'an 7:158]. Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, his parents, and his family, was the first Muslim, as God says, "Say, 'Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for God, Lord of the worlds. No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first [among you] of the Muslims.'" [Qur'an 6:162]. None of the messengers preceded him except that he was a deputy for him in his people, so that people would know that the religion is one, and that Muhammad came to represent it in its entirety and to clarify what differed among the followers of the previous messengers. God says, "We revealed to you the Scripture only to clarify for them what they differ about, and guidance and mercy for people who believe." [Qur'an 16:64].
The messages brought by the previous messengers were affirmed by the message of Muhammad, as they were his deputies. Muhammad did not come to invalidate what they brought, but rather to confirm its validity and the belief in them and their books. God says, "And We have not sent you except comprehensively to mankind..." [Qur'an 34:28].God says, "O people, I am the Messenger of God to you all—He to whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. There is no god but He. He gives life and causes death.” So believe in God and His Messenger, the Unlettered Prophet, who believes in God and His words. And follow him, that you may be guided." [Qur'an 7:158].The words of God are His creation, including the perfect words, which are His messengers, peace be upon them. This includes Prophet Jesus, peace be upon him, whom God describes as "…and His Word that He conveyed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him…" [Qur'an 4:171]. The Qur'anic context continues to speak about the Children of Israel, affirming the unity of the message, "Among the people of Moses is a community that guides by truth, and thereby does justice." [Qur'an 7:159].
Herein, God, The Almighty clarifies in His revelations the relationship between the messengers and the final prophet as He has taken an oath from them to believe in him and support him. This is well stablished in God’s sacred books the Torah and Bible. The Almighty says in addressing Moses after He clarified that His punishment will hit who He wishes while His mercy is extended to “those who follow the messenger, the Ummi Prophet , whom they will find written in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them. He will enjoin on them that which is right and forbid them that which is wrong. He will make lawful for them all pure things and prohibit for them the foul things; and he will relieve them of their burden and the chains that were upon them. Then those who believed in him, and honoured him and supported him, and followed the light which is sent down with him: they are indeed the successful” (7:158).
God Almighty ascertains that Muhammad is his messenger for all people and this does not exclude anyone from Adam to Jesus. “Say O people I am God’s messenger to you all” (7:158). This is because Muhammad (PBHPF) is the first of all Muslims. The Almighty says to Muhammad (PBHPF): “Say my prayer and devoutness and my life and death are for God, the Lord of the worlds; He has no partner and with this I am ordained, and I am the first of the Muslims” (6:162-163). So, all the messengers that came before him were his deputies among their people so that people would know that religion is one; “He has ordained for you (people) that religion which He commended unto Noah, and that which We inspire unto you (Muhammad), and that which We commended unto Abraham and Moses and Jesus, (saying): Establish the religion, and be not divided therein” (42:13). And Muhammad came to show the status of this religion above all religion - “He it is who has sent His messenger with the guidance and the Religion of Truth, that He may cause it to prevail over all religion, however much the idolaters may hate this” (9:33) - and to clarify what the followers of previous messengers disagreed upon: “We did not send you (O Muhammad) the book except to clarify to them what they have disagreed upon and a right guidance and mercy to people who believe” (16:64). So, what the previous messengers came with is Muhammad’s message, as they are deputies for him, and he endorsed this one message with his final message. Muhammad (PBHPF) did not come to nullify what the previous messengers came with, but to assert the truth therein, believing in them, and in their books. The Almighty says: “We have sent you (Muhammad), for sure, to all humankind” (34:28). And He says: “Say: O people I am God’s messenger to you all. He who has the Kingdom of heaven and earth there is no god but Him, He gives life and death, so believe in God and his messenger: the Ummi prophet who believes in God and His words; (O people) follow him, so that you might find guidance” (7:158).
God’s words are His creation and among them are His complete words who are His messengers PBUT and among them is Jesus (PBUH): “…God’s messenger and His word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him...” (4:171). The Qur’anic sequence continues speaking about the Children of Israel, thus asserting the oneness of the message: “And from Moses’ people is a nation that leads with the truth and administer justice therewith” (7:159).
